I have Win2K and the Registry key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default" had disappeared. The other keys under "Apps\.Default" were there. So I added the last .Default, then added the 3 subkeys that the other keys had (.Current, .Default, Utopia0). That action added the 'Default Beep' sound event to my Control Panel/Sounds. Then, via the panel, I pointed that event to my 'ding.wav' file. Fixed. Andy
