I tried disabling the mup and it just hung at a later point, so I unplugged all usb
devices and chose last known good configuration. This finally got me into windows
xp. The first thing I did was go to System restore and go back to the last system
checkpoint.
After the system restored successfully, I plugged everything back in and it seems
to work fine. I think it had a lot more to do with choosing last known good configuration
as I had not chosen that before.
