Taking the battery out of the smoke alarm quiets the annoying hi-pitched squeal but
does not address the problem of the fire.

The Messenger Service on your computer is responding to spam being sent thru unprotected
ports on your computer. Turning off the Messenger Service does not plug the holes.

Install a good firewall (Sygate, Zone Alarm) or at the very least turn on the Internet
Connection Firewall (ICF) that came with XP. If you have SP1 applied, the settings
for ICF have been modified to block the ports used to access the Messenger Service.
