I faced the same issue while connecting a maxtor external storage device. But i solved
it by just letting the 1394 network adapter to show up in the device manager as enabled
but powering the external storage device on or off.
Some firewire devices do not detect firewire connectivity to a computer with xp unless
they are powered on or off.
Hope this works for you too.
