Do you have internet access - preferably broadband? In 1995 I downloaded Slackware
linux via 9600 baud (!) modem & installed linux on my 486. Too painful to contemplate
nowadays, I agree, but I was unemployed and had no money but losts of time then.
Is there a linux user's group on campus or in town? One of them would likely be happy
to give up their last year's disks when they upgrade to the latest distribution.
If you have a few GB to spare on your hard drive, you can set it up for dual-boot.
My work PC & home PC each run both OSes.
MS probably just doesn't think they'd have a chance annoying AMD over "XP". They
tried to trademark "windows" back in the day, and Intel tried "586", but the courts
wouldn't let them.
