This may be common knowledge by now, but i noticed I could not use regedit, msconfig,
or task manager because i was infected with some kind of virus... I downloaded a
few tools from symantec but nothing was detected.
To fix the problem I booted into safe mode, went to the windows\system32 folder and
found a series of files created around the time i noticed odd behavior. The main
file was MSConfig35.exe. there were a few other files with odd unintelligible names
surrounding it that I deleted too. I also found WebDav.exe in my Documents and Settings\All
Users\Programs\Startup folder, along with win88.exe, another small exe, and a TFT
file. All of which were deleted.
I then went into the registry and removed references to all of these files, THEN
went to microsoft and downloaded a patch that sealed up a hole that allowed an attack
to shut down my system using a buffer overrun to the RPC service, allowing an attacker
to wreck havoc on my system.
After doing all of this then rebooting, everything seems fine.. however even with
recent norton definitions installed, NAV did not catch this virus. I only noticed
it due to the fact I could not view task manager, regedit, or msconfig, plus the
RPC shutdown incident was kind of an alarm. Hope this helps if anyone else has this.
