John: to answer your first question; yes, the MS patch will restore your RPC Service,
if you can download it.
the sequence of doing things is important because the MS patch will do a system restore
as part of its install routine and that will include the worm!
so do it this way:
remove the worm (Symantec),
reboot,
download the MS patch to restore RPC,
install the patch,
reboot.
now if you can't reach the internet, we will have to manually work on the problem,
so let me know...
