I did the same thing in Win2k. Disabling RpcSs and rebooting was a bad idea, I'm
not doing that again. Sounds like this should work for both 2k and XP, although the
methods might vary slightly.
The easist way without hacking you registry (and this does the same thing but explicitly
and not by trail and error) is to use the recovery console.
I installed recovery console as a startup option (as described in windows help).
Booted to it (selecting the install that i screwed up and typing the admin password).
Then at the prompt typed:
enable RpcSs service_auto_start
Which changes your registry to tell it to start RpcSs automatically (just like hacking
the registry but you don't have to worry aboult getting it as wrong). Then to restart:
exit
It rebooted and everything works again.
Then I deleted recovery console (as described in windows help)
Remember this was in windows 2000 but I imagine it should be similar in XP
All sorted.
