Thanks for the tip, it also worked for me.
My problems occured when I used PartitionMagic 8.0 and tried to to create a new partition
for installing Linux. I recived an error but the partitions were there so I installed
Linux (that worked fine).
When I then tried to boot XP I got the described error.
Unfortunatly did I first tried to fix the problem by creating repear disketts from
MS (because it is a known bugg that you can't use the re-installtion cd and use option
R, because it doesn't accept a given adminstrator password) and tried to used the
disketts. That didn't solve the problem so I used Google and find your tip.
But as you mentioned, it is important to check the
/boot/grub/grub.conf file to get write divice info.
