There were three factors which drove the choice of name. First the final syllable "-dows" has a resonance if not a homonymity with the final syllable of MS-DOS the basis of all Windows releases up to and including WIN-me. Second the obvious synecdoche already noted, whereby the software is known by the name of one of its elements. And third, because "Win" is what Gates wanted his DOS to do more than anything else. Triumph-DOS hardly sounded like a contender though.
