I had the exact same problem. Two PC's running XP Pro connected via Linksys Router
to a DSL modem. Shared Internet access was fine but could not share files between
PC's. Had to do two things:
1. Disable Firewall on both Network connections.
2. Click on "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" in WINS tab of Advanced TCP/IP Settings.
Of course, this is not a very secure arrangement so I will have to come up with an
alternate configuration. But if you need to copy files over the two XP machines this
should do the trick.
