Windows XP generates a hash code when installed. This is generated by checking various
hardware components. Every time you start XP it regenerates this hash code and checks
it against the one stored on your HDD. If a major hardware change takes place, the
hash code generated at boot time does not check out against the one stored, and you
get locked out with a 0x80090006 error.
What Microsoft should do is allow this hash code to be updated by the end user for
a maximum of say three times per install. I recently upgraded my hdd to a 60GB,
copied everything across and it boots to the login screen, but after I enter username
and pswd it goes away for approx 10 secs and comes back with the error. Like the
other person, my XP CD is legitimate, but I don't want to reload everything - it
would take many hours. I'm seriously hacked off - I understand Microsoft's reasons
for trying to stamp out piracy, but honest people are being messed around too - maybe
we should all sue Microsoft for the time wasted on reloads... but does anyone ever
win against Microsoft ??? Don't think so, not even the US government !
