Can't install any printers

Windows XP won't allow me to install any printer drivers they all fail. I've just bought an Epson C44UX and uninstalled my Lexmark Z35 driver then tried to install the Epson driver. Now I can't install any printers. The spool service seems to be running but I notice that it still depends on the LexBCE service, which is also running.
