Windows XP hangs at 'Windows is Shutting Down' screen

Hi, I would be greatful if anyone can help! When I shut down Windows XP it hangs at the screen 'Windows is Shutting Down' for about 5 minutes, then closes. It is slow to start also, about 2 minutes. I can see nothing obvious, and although I may have downloaded an update, I can't remember.
