On many older computers a BIOS upgrade is necessary for XP to install and run properly.

Give us some more info on the system you trying to install XP on---older, newer, 
name brand or clone, did you repartition and format before running Setup and if so, 
what version of fdisk did you use, did you check the mobo mfr site to see if a BIOS 
upg is necessary for XP, genuine MS XP CDROM or "other"?
