well, I had this problem, but it was due to having done an update to my graphics card driver which was a correct download, just didn't work! I recommend starting up in safe mode (keep hitting F5 I think at startup, then select SAFE MODE with Networking). Then once started up, go into START-->Accessories-->system tools-->system restore Pick a checkpoint that seems to be earlier than when the problem started happening and go for it. If that works ok, great. If there seems to be a bunch of software missing that you know you recently installed, it could well be that it was that which screwed things up, though by all means use a more recent restore point. good luck, and I suggest adjusting the profile of your parents to NOT be administrators :)
