XP Flashes a blue screen and reboots...grr

Alright I can tell this is going to be fun...posting in this forum is my last resort.
Before I start, let me say my problem is DIFFERENT from all the others I’ve seen
because I cannot boot into windows at all to turn off the 'Automatically restart
on BSOD' option.
First off let me start by saying, my (other) computer decided it wanted to delete
the Windows\System32\Drivers folder for no reason...how convenient!
Right after the XP loading screen goes off, a blue screen flashes and it restarts.
So I stuck in my XP CD and did the good old' in-place upgrade. It goes through the
upgrade perfectly fine (so it replaced the system32\drivers directory so that's no
longer an issue) until it tries to initialize the installation. It says: "Setup cannot
set the required Windows XP configuration information. This indicates an internal
setup error. Contact system administrator." I've tried doing this many times and
it says it each time. I would contact my system administrator but...I am the administrator
so that would be pointless. Now if any of you would have an idea of what I could
do, it would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, the last thing I want to do is format.
The computer is a Compaq 933MHz 256MB SDRAM 60Gig HDD.....One thing that may be of
significance would be that I Installed a service pack and some patches that fixed
certain problems I had that were not pertaining to this...I installed SP1 and everything
ran fine for a whole day before this happened. Help. :)
