As you cannot get into a desktop. I am guessing that safe mode is also not an option. Boot to the WinXP Cd and start a clean install to a new directory. WINDOWS is 'old' WinXP and maybe WINXP for the 'new'. You can then save any data and test whether a clean install will be any better (only hardware between you and success). You did not say whether you haddone an upgrade. They tend to be flakier and less stable than a clean install. Good luck.
