"no" on the 'phone cord, although you may be able to make a home network using cross-over 
cable.  More technical regulars on this forum can help here.

In the meantime, you might try 
1) copying your laptop files onto a CD and moving the CD to the desktop; 
2) there's also using zip disks (that would require a zip drive, available as external 
w/USB connection for <$50), and/or
3) you might also try file compression, zipping the full file into a lesser sized 
*.zip.
