Hi, I experienced similar problems today with my centrino laptop. I found what caused
it and how to fix it, perhaps it helps with your problem.
Before the problems occured I did a fresh install of windows 2000 pro with SP2, then
upgraded to SP4 via WU. Then I installed all the drivers from the cd, and one piece
of software: sygate personal firewall. I usually tweak the OS after an install, remove
the services I know I don't need, and try stopping the ones I think I don't need.
Anyways, after shutting down and removing a service called 'Spectrum24 Event Monitor',
the following problems started occuring:
1. After startup, I try opening up the control panel which leads to the taskbar freezing
up. I have to kill explorer.exe and restart it, and everything is OK again. The control
panel is the only thing causing the freeze-up so far though. And if I try opening
the control panel after restarting explorer.exe it works fine.
2. When shutting down, I get two instances of a "End program - sample" window. After
pressing End Now on both, windows shuts down normally.
After getting these like 3 out of 3 times, I tried starting the mentioned service
again. And voila, everything runs smooth again. So I just leave it at Automatic.
Looks like it has something to do with the WLAN card (Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100
3B). I tried disabling the WLAN card, but the problems were still there if the service
was stopped.
Anways, maybe you have the same process or a similar one causing the problem? I don't
know if XP automatically finds the WLAN drivers but I had to install it manually
in 2000. If you have the same WLAN card but had XP automatically find the drivers,
maybe it would work if you re-installed them from the driver CD, and had the mentioned
service to run automatically?
Just a few ideas...
