Success! I just kept trying, plugging and unplugging the cross-connect cable and
running the Network Setup Wizard on the destop machine. After several goes and trying
different sequences the LAN suddenly worked and the Internet link was shared!
At present I have ICF running on the desktop as the only firewall. Do you know if
this is adequate? I disabled Zonealarm and haven't dared try it again in case the
LAN stops working.
