This same problem happened to me. Mostly no system sounds, PC beep otherwise. The
problem is that some application (or a registry corruption) caused the (Default)
value of HKEY_CURRENT_USER to be set to something other than (value not set). I simply
highlighted the (Default) entry and hit Delete.
