If you have a genuine Microsoft XP CDROM, you can start the computer from the CD
and then start the Recovery Console.
Description
of the Windows XP Recovery Console
You'd run the chkdsk /r command at the command prompt.
You can also read this MS KB article:
HOW
TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console in Windows XP
Your computer may have come with CDs provided by the manufacturer which are not genuine
MS CDs but are called "Recovery CDs" (not to be confused with the Recovery Console
of XP Setup). If so, surf to the manufacturer's support pages to learn how to use
the supplied CDs to access the Recovery Console.
Alternately, you can download a program from MS that will make six boot floppies,
and included on those boot floppies is the Recovery Console.
Here
is a link to the MS downloads page. You have to choose the right package for
your Edition of XP, and with or without SP1.
You would also want to use this method if you have difficulty getting past the part
of the Recovery Console where you enter the Administrator password. This MS KB article
explains why:
'The
Password Is Not Valid' Error Message Appears When You Log On to Recovery Console
in Windows XP
