Well, I bumped into the same problem yesterday, trying to copy my wife's files to
the XP desktop from a Win98 notebook (both Hungarian). Although XP says parallel
is only for XP-XP and despite the unlucky attempt reported here, I went for the parallel
connection.
When Win98 was the host, I had no luck. XP could ping its address in the command
prompt, but could not find it, neither by IP, nor by name. The I switched, making
XP the host, Win98 the client. And it worked this way! I could find the XP box, opening
the share and copy the files therein. No magic was required.
For what reason? I do not really know. Mine is a fairly simple install, the real
network configured as "Home / Small office" (??). But I think it is quite important
for Windows (for some reason) that the machines are in the same workgroup.
Good luck,
Zs
