Thanks for your help jcw.

There are two options - update and new install. I ran the update as I thought new
install wipes out my hard drive (bear with me i don't know much about this stuff).
Since I cannot connect to the internet i can't check for updates online..however
i'm been faithful about getting regular updates from the MS site.

Yes, I can see explorer.exe as a process. When I try to end it and start it again
there is no change. But when I try to restart a windows comes up saying explorer.exe
is not responding and I have to click "end".

here are a few errors I found through the event viewer: "fips and processor failed
to load" "device attached is not functioning" "your computer has lost its lease to
the IP address"

I have the Dell cd, with a diagnostics option but when i open that it's only a bit
of technical info, none of which i understand. I have the windows Xp cd, which as
i said above gives me the option of a new install.
I tried scannow again but it stops running when i run it in normal windows. it won't
run at all in safe mode, whether through cmd or run.
thanks again.
