Thanks for your problem solving. I also found a solution, unfortunately before I read your message. I stumbled onto a GE 3 button optical mouse, model HO97986, which includes software that allows programming the middle button for many functions, one of which is double click. The instruction manual lists the web site www.jascoproducts.com. I assume they make the mouse for GE. This mouse was $13 at Big Lots.
