I have a question about Making Sure the Correct HAL is Installed:

The HAL error I got would not let me even boot up on that hard drive so I used that drive as a slave and booted from another drive. Using explorer, I still couldn't get into the drive, update the HAL, or retreive any of the hundreds of files there. So I tried to reinstall XP like this posting recommends. XP wants to format my drive obliterating all my files. Is there another way to retreive my files or save the hard drive?
