Something seems to be screwed up and after kicking it hard enough (maybe that's resetting ESCD) it works again and will never happen again. NONE of those who said that they fixed the problem (no matter which way) later posted again that the problem re-occured. So I'm pretty much convinced (and truly hope!) this is a one-time problem.
