GREETINGS TO ALL,
The main problem to identify is win x'sannoyance of locking down the files so you
can't easily do anything with them. A fresh install of it, or another os like ME/98SE
could make all in this forum happier.
the ideas or principles are simple:
1) boot from a bootable floppy or cd.
2) format the hard drive partition containing windows xp.
* Note that there are more than a few ways of doing this. You can use fdisk
from microsoft, however, there is a much better way. I use a partitioning utility
program, partition magic 7.01 from Power Quest. To do this now in case you are in
limbo, will require access to a computer with a correctly running windows program.
Install PQ magic, and then choose to make an emergency disk. This will make a bootable
disk and a non bootable disk(2 floppies).
Now place the first disk(bootable) into the floppy disk of your misbehaving computer,
and hit cntrl-alt-del and reboot the computer. As before go into the bios to make
sure that you have boot from a drive first, then save and exit. Computer then should
boot to a prompt. a:>
Now take out first floppy and place second floppy in the a drive. type at thye a:>
pqmagic and hit enter,
Bingo, pqmagic starts up, you can then choose to remove the partition and secure
erase it, create a new partition, fat32 if you want to go back to ME/98SE/98 and
then you choose to exit, it will prompt you if you want to make changes. Say yes
and remove floppy from disk drive as the computer starts booting back up. after it
is done, you will have a formatted partition. You then need to reinstall your windows
o.s.
One point to note: If you have multiple partitions already, you can easily set another
primary partition to active, in order to boot up to another o.s. that was already
installed on another partition, and then you can install PQmagic in the windows o.s.
that you boot up to and run it from windows. From there you will be able to remove
the winxp partition, or any other one, resize partitions, or make and format new
partitions.
Pqmagic and system commander(make sure to get the latest version) are both good for
these features and abilities.
Good luck, and Yes Jesus can save your data, media, computer, but most importantly,
you!
Sincerely,
Dave S.
