You've been so helpful, I wish I had better news...
First, I can't get into Recovery Console from the Windows CD, and some research told
me that it has something to do with Sysprep:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308402
After downloading the boot disks from Microsoft I was able to use them to get into
the Recovery Console (did this a while ago, only way I can get into it)... so I've
been using the floppies by default every time someone tells me to do anything. However,
I followed the instructions in the KB you mentioned and after hitting enter to "setup"
Windows, then hitting F8 to accept the license, I don't have the options it says
I should. The KB says I should have my XP partition highlighted and press R to perform
a repair install. My options are:
To setup Windows on the selected item press enter
To create a partition in the unpartitioned space press C
To delete the selected partition press D
If I hit enter, to setup windows, it says, "Windows XP cannot recognize the partition
you selected." Then it tells me I can go back and delete the partition and install
in the unpartitioned space.
Here's something I noticed in searching out a screenshot. The screenshot I found,
after getting through the "press enter to setup" and "F8 to accept license" steps
showed his partition as:
C:\WINDOWS "Windows XP Home Edition"
Mine, however, shows:
C: Partition1[NTFS] 38201 MB < 1265 MB free >
Now to be on the safe side I also tried it with just the CD, instead of the floppies,
but I have the exact same options.
So... you've been my best resource so far, any ideas?
