apps are notified in the event of an explorer crash, but only a select few redraw
their icons properly. you can pay some $ for an app that hooks into the system tray
and watches everything that's put in there (to be honest, systray should do this)
- that app can then restore the icons.
or, if all you want is to access the main window again, you can use a freeware app
i just made for myself:
http://www.lexpos.com/pers.matt/WinPop3.zip
you type some text that is the start of the window text (example: this window text
is "Annoyances.org - Reply to message...." so just typing Annoyances (case sensitive))
and pressing [pop!], should pop the window to the front, hidden or not
for apps that dont redraw the icon, the proggie keeps a list of all the windows you
popped, double click a list entry and it will pop that window again

irq conflict or wrong driver for your network card. replace the card/move to another
pci slot/update driver
