Thanks for this tip. It was also a way for me to get rid of the message count for my niece who checked her hotmail once and XP remembered (endlessly). I just deleted the folder containing her e-mail reference. The only thing to add is that I had to right-click on the MessageCount setting in each folder and choose modify and then change the value to zero. I like the messagecount in the logon screen, but they really do need to make an easy way to reset this when phantom values start showing up.
