Information on zip disk gone forever?

I'd been having some hard drive problems recently, and had started backing up all the important stuff that couldn't be easily replaced onto a zip 100 disk. I'd used it to restore that information when necessary. Recently, after another HD failure, I tried to get something off the disk at a local Kinko's, and when I opened the disk, all the files and folders on it were displayed as gibberish. That is to say, the folders and files all came up, but their titles were all random characters, many not even English, and none would open when I tried. I know this disk was okay about a week ago, and the guy at Kinko's told me if it was corrupt, the folders and files shouldn't have displayed at all. The workstations there were Windows 2000, and all the stuff transferred to the disk was created in XP Pro, if that means anything. Also, through a fun windows XP Pro bug involving zip drives, my main HD last time I reinstalled Windows got named F: instead of C:, and the zip became C:, if that could possibly have anything to do with it. I'm hoping against hope that the info on there isn't completely gone or corrupt, so just wondering if anyone has any ideas.
