XP is not built on DOS the way 95,98,ME were. DOS in XP is an emulator, and frankly
not a very good one.
Microsoft is apparently moving toward selling better OS emulation software...this
may not be a real solution for some time (or ever, who knows)...see this link...
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/
Otherwise, for using XP's built in emulator, these suggestions might help...then
again, they might be totally useless. You should check the software designer's website,
if one exists, for program specific solutions.
1) Create a shortcut (pif) to the program. Open it's properties and uncheck "Close
on Exit." Now if the program returns any meaningfull error messages you will be
able to see them.
2) Mess with the options in the DOS shortcut, particularly memory, especially if
you are getting an error about memory. (duh!)
3) Try starting XP in VGA Enabled mode, especially if the program returns no error
messages and doesn't close but just stops on a blank screen. Tap F8 after you start
your computer to get the startup options.
4) If the program comes with instructions on editing autoexec.bat or config.sys,
in XP you need to edit autoexec.nt or config.nt in your Windows\System32 directory.
Open them in notepad.
5) Look for an update to the software. Some popular DOS games (Doom, Quake) have
Windows ports available online. Some problems (such as skipping sound) can sometimes
be fixed with patches.
And with all that said, realize that some DOS programs just won't work in XP, period.
DOS in XP is an emulation, it's not real DOS, many DOS features are not supported.
Good luck.
