Adam, thank you for your response. Even though all of the "experts" in the local
computer stores assured me that Windows XP did not have DOS, and could not run DOS
programs, I discovered after much digging, that if I clicked on "Start" then "Programs"
then "All programs" then "Accessories" lo and behold, there was the DOS icon. And,
if I dragged that icon to the desktop, and right clicked it, and then clicked "Properties"
I got a whole raft of options that let me get a fairly usable DOS. There are some
defects, like the character size is tiny (and selecting a larger size does not help),
and it does not do a carriage return after a program writes an error message to the
screen, but by and large it is usable.
Maybe the worst defect is that printing
a document is sloo-o-ow and intermittent. It stops, it scratches its head, it takes
a sip of coffee, and then it goes and prints a few more lines. I guess it has better
things to do than printing. I am told that creating a windows program is
a major job, and I have something like 700 programs that I would need to convert,
so going to Windows is not a possibility.
