I just did something similiar, and Christopher's post below (dated July 26,2002)
helped alot. I did it manually by editing the boot.ini file and simply deleting
the Windows folder of the version I no longer wanted. Here are more detailed instructions
I just created for my own reference.
1.Make a backup copy and then edit the file boot.ini which is in the root directory
of your boot-up partition, usually drive C.
2.Usually this file is hidden from view. In order to identify the boot.ini file
go to Folder Options, View Tab and select "show hidden files and folders" AND deselect
"Hide protected operating system files..."
3.Here is a sample boot.ini file:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition"
/fastdetect
It shows two operating systems. If you want to delete the Home Edition, simply delete
that line AND make sure you change the default. The file should then look like this:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition"
/fastdetect
Again, note that the default line points to XP Professional Edition (and has changed
from the previous default).
4.If you are booted on the Windows you want to keep; you can now delete the Windows
folder of the OS you want to remove. And you are done.
5. If you accidentally corrupt or delete the boot.ini file, you can recreate it
by booting from a floppy and then restoring the boot.ini.
