Since you say you cannot find the Messenger application on your list or perhaps cannot
get the services window I started thinking...I don't know for sure if you need to
or would benefit from doing it, but if you go to START then go to RUN and in the
command prompt type in "sfc /scannow" it will check your windows installation to
make sure it is complete. Note that you must leave a space between "sfc" and "/scannow",
and if your windows installation came from a cd instead of pre-installed you will
need the disc to perform the scan.
It may just be that somewhere along the lines the local link to your services was
altered. You might also want to perform a disc check as well, but I think if you
have to do that you will have to do the other scan to actually fix the problem.
Performing a disc check, in case you haven't done it before, is done by going to
RUN (as with the other procedure) and typing in "chkdsk /f". Again, you must leave
a space between "chkdsk" and "/f".
If you discover there is a greater problem with your windows installation there is
actually a way to reinstall windows without losing any data, although many do not
realize it. If you decide you need to do that you can read how to on this link.
