I didn't have either of those KB/QFE's installed on my XP Home SP2 system but started
getting the error after installing Intuit's "It's Deductible" v7.0. Just as I ok'd
the installation's "reboot now to use me?" msgbox, WinPatrol came up and and warned
me of the new application. The in-process-reboot prevented me from telling WinPatrol
it was ok, so that MAY have been a factor. The first symptom I had was that attempts
to print forms from "It's Deductible" just opened empty Adobe Reader 6.0.1 windows.
I concluded that some linkage (registry) had failed to persist, perhaps due to WinPatrol.
After that, and after subsequent reboots, I.E. (v6.0.2800etc) started acting up.
Failed to open new windows from ALT-N or right-click on link, and every minute or
so popped up EventId 26 ("dwwin.exe - Application Error : The application failed
to initialize properly (0xc0000142).").
Uninstalling Adobe Reader seems to have fixed it.
