one last question before i buy a few things

One thing that i just noticed was that when i do push the start button after the
pc has sat for a while, Ive noticed that the green power light on the tower does
not go on, but the red light is lit saying that there is power going to the harddrive.
Also the fan for the cpu spins. The green light does come on when the pc finally
starts to boot.

Could it be that the power supply unit is starting to fail,or could it be that the
motherboard is on its way out? (Even though i haven't been getting any error messages
)

one last thing too: My son said that earlier this week he seen the green power supply
light on the tower blink a few times before the pc itself shut down unexpectantly.
