I had the same problem connecting two PC´s thru Ethernet cards with a crossed-over cable. Fixed it establishing a connection speed of 10 Mbps full duplex(instead of 100 Mbps) in one of the cards. The other may be left in auto-negotiation. Seems that the cross-over cable is not good enough for hig-speed communication.
