Well this may or may not help to narrow the problem.
This problem started with me following a recent liv update of NIS2003. After some
research it was suggested that this maybe conflict between XP and 2003 for this particular
update (I was also have problems with my broadband speed and the computer had slowed
somewhat as well.) I upgraded to NIS2004 and that worked beautifully - UNTIL I DID
A LIVE UPDATE!!! Arrrgghhhh - back to square one! Uninstalling NIS solves the problem
and returns all the icons but personally I would rather have the protection.
However, the above does seem to confirm that this is an NIS problem.
