I also had this problem, and have resolved it. I did a number of things and I am
not sure exactly which ones were responsible.
First I tried starting in Safe mode, last known good... NO LUCK
Tried chkdsk NO LUCK.
Tried running recovery install from the CD NO LUCK.
Read a post that suggested that non-MS themes could cause this problem - mounted
the HD in another PC and copied the file styleshell.dll into all subfolders of C:\windows\resources\themes
(already existed in some). This may have made a difference as I was able to get into
Safe mode but the problem still occurred.
Discovered that I could log in as administrator (but no other profile) by Control-Alt-Del
at the login prompt.
Found loads of spyware - Kazaa, P2P networking, GAIN/Gator,Cydoor, IBIS toolbar,
Buddylinks, MSView, Precision Time, My Way Toolbar, My Seach Bar, MSN Toolbar, Dashbar
Toolbar,nd media tickets (some of these may be the same). Removed it with Adaware.
Had previously put on a security block to prevent MSN Messenger 4.7 and Windows
Messenger 6.1 from running. Discovered that MSN Messenger 6.2 had been installed
over the top of 6.1. Removed the restriction, then uninstalled v6.2.
Reactivated Windows (even though this is a legitimate copy, and it had been activated
25 days earlier). Also noticed that Norton AV autoprotect wont start.
Can now log in normally to all profiles.
Hope this helps.
