A WINDOWS-ONLY SOLUTION
I had the same problem, and solved it thanks to this thread.
I triple-boot Win98, W2k & XP. (No Linux). Win98 is on the C-drive fat32 partition,
W2k & XP are on other NTFS partitions. I use the simple Windows boot menu to select
OS (no Bootmagic).
After using Drive Image 2002 to restore an image of the C drive partition (to fix
a problem which had crept into my Win98 setup), I got the 'autock program not found'
and automatic shut down whenever I tried booting to XP.
From this thread I realised the problem was that the XP partition had been 'hidden'
by Drive Image.
My solution was to boot from a set of Partition Magic floppies and then use PM to
unhide both the NTFS boot partitions - W2k & XP.
