More info...Haven't yet solved the problem, but have just learned something! I created
a new user account in XP and when I login to the new account, the problem does not
occur, the power management works fine. Then if I go back and login to the original
user account, the problem returns. This tells me that the problem is not in the
bios, and probably not a hardware problem. The same processes run regardless of
which account I am logged into. Ergo, problem must be due to something in the registry!
