I've had similar problems, and tried just about all the suggestions here to no avail. I have 5 pcs at home on a phoneline network. 2 of the 5 computers regularly and intermittently get the dreaded flashing network cable unplugged problem. IMO, this is a Windows XP problem. I just "downgraded" the most problematic pc to Windows 98se and no more problems. I think the problem is with xp combined with certain hardware or chipsets, etc. I don't know if sp2 will have a fix.
