Here at work, we encountered the EXACT same problem:
We powered off a machine. Disconnected the existing HD. Installed a new HD, booted
from the Win XP Pro CD. Reformatted (not quick) and installed XP Pro. We then installed
Norton Antivirus 8.0 Corp. We connected via dialup to the internet via ATT to download
the latest Virus updates and XP patches. Within a few minutes, we recieved the LSASS.exe
error.
Okay, sounds impossible right? Here is how we fixed it:
1. Disable System Recovery.
2. Download the latest virus patches and XP patches.
3. Download the latest W32.Sasser Removal Tool from symantec.
4. Reboot in safe mode and run the tool.
5. Reboot and run the tool again just to be sure.
6. Turn on system recovery.
This worked. Another way is if you are using NAV, you can use another PC to download
the Virus Definitions that are self-installing and place them on a CD. This works
great if your machine keeps shutting down.
