Question about 'Enabling or Disabling Automatic Windows Update'

I cannot enable or disable the Automatic Windows Update on my eMachines W2646 because
everything is grayed out. I have no idea why or what to do. I use a dial-up to
access the internet.
I also cannot get Live Updates from Norton/Symantec antivirus or access their websites.
I don't know if these problems are related or not. I got this pc on 6/22/04 from
a friend who ordered it from TigerDirect.com.
