I just installed XP and had the same problem. Post my solution here hoping that even
if Karl surely by now has solved his problem it might help others.
Start msconfig at start, run
Go to the tab called autostart
Unmark all
Restart the computer and see i fthe problem is solved. If yes enable som of the items
in autostart and restart the computer. Continue úntil you identify the program that
is causing windows explorer to start.
In my case it was ASUSBROBE. So I started that program and disabled start at boot
in config.
Problem solved. Hope that this will be a small payback for all the help I received
through the web so far.
Good speed.....
