Try this please.
Boot to the RC
Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console: http://support.microsoft.com/default.as...-us;314058
At C:\windows (or winnt)
type cd system32 the directory should now be
C:\windows\system32
type :
copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe
1 file should be copied, now REBOOT!
Sometimes this won't work because the file wsaupdater.exe will not allow itsself
to be copied over, even though it appears that is has been. Please try the following
if the above fix does not work initially.
After booting into the Recovery Console and switching to the system32 directory,
Type:
ren wsaupdater.exe wsaupdater2.exe
copy userintit.exe
When asked if you wish to overwrite the file answer (Y)es
1 file should be copied.
Type:
Exit
windows should reboot.
logon w/administrator priviledges
in windows explorer, navigate to C:\windows\system32
find the file you renamed to wsaupdater2.exe and delete it.
exit windows explorer
go to trash bin and permanently delete wsaupdater2.exe
you should not have to edit the Registry at this time as the above steps will reassign
the proper userinit.exe in the registry.
