Thank you Tony,
I had inadvertently uninstalled the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator when
troubleshooting sound issues with a new computer, and had assumed that whatever device
it was would be redetected and reinstalled automatically. Of course then the sound
issues became worse. A Google search on the status message in Device Manager took
me to a discussion on the Dev Shed forums, which referenced your post. That did
the trick! Thanks again.
